The Wehlener Sonnenuhr comes from Wegeler's winery in Bernkastel/Mosel. I purchased it at Chamber Street Wines a couple of years ago. They sometimes offer back vintages sourced directly from the grower's cellar, as does Crush Wines, also located in New York City.

This 1994 Wehlener Sonnenuhr is very attractive. A deep, brilliant golden color which hints at the wine's age. If you tilt the glass and hold it against a sheet of white paper the brilliance becomes even more apparent. Color deserves more attention, particularly in white wines.

The bouquet is pleasantly spicy, smells of bay leaf and wet pebble stones. Then juicy peach, grapefruit and honey shine through. It is off-dry and has a crisp but delicate acidity. The 1994 Sonnenuhr is concentrated and very elegant on the palate. Lots of minerality on the tongue. The honey note is pronounced. Ripe apple and a very subtle spiciness complement it. Medium length with an elegant finish.

A Spätlese with a beautiful structure, which gives this Riesling the necessary backbone to develop even further for a few more years. Very concentrated and elegant flavor profile.

In short:
Very good
