It does not happen often to find a Spanish Riesling in a wine store in New York City. It probably does not even happen often in Spain itself. Tumans 2008 Riesling may have the answer why.

Poveda's Tumans Riesling is grown in the coastal area of Alicante, which is cooler than Spain's inland regions and thus cool enough to grow the grape that needs regular breaks from hot summer temperatures. But this is about the only regional aspect within the wine. And here lies the wine's problem: it does not have much of a character.

There is a hint of candied pear on the nose but I can't detect anything else except for the smell of alcohol. Which is not high, in fact at 11% it is actually pleasantly low. There is also a good amount of acidity. But it is more or less free of flavor. A sensation of bitterness is all I can taste. And its short length does not give me enough time to detect any Riesling character.

I wish I could have said something more positive about my first Riesling from Spain. I wish.

In short:
Poor - Average
