Despite its fame, the Rheingau is actually a fairly small wine region. But it has the highest percentage of Riesling of any of the wine regions in Germany. The small village of Johannisberg has become a synonym with Riesling in many countries. Varied soils of quartzite, weathered slate, loess, clay and sandy gravel.
