The Kamptal got its name from the river Kamp, which runs through this valley of loess and primary rock soils (although the Heiligenstein has more volcanic soils). Starting with the 2008 vintage the Kamptal has been declared a DAC for Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Loess is not ideal for Riesling, which is grown mostly on the vineyards with primary rock and volcanic soils.
