Clare Valley is situated in the northern Mt Lofty Ranges, South Australia. The first vineyards were planted and wines produced in the early 1840s. Clare Valley has about 50 wineries and produces around 2% of Australia's wine. Riesling is the region's most important grape variety.
The winter in Clare Valley tends to be cool and wet, with most of the rain falling between May and October. Summers on the other hand tend to be hot and dry - the average temperature in January is 22° celsius. Frost and hail risk is minimal.
The soils consist primarily of red-brown loam and alluvial clay over limestone.
