The name of the estate derives from the Carthusian monks who owned the estate and the vineyard Karthäuserhofberg from the 14th century to the early 19th century. The estate is now managed by Christoph Tyrell and Helga Tyrell. The soil in the Karthäuserhofberg vineyard consists of Devon slate and red slate (high proportion of iron). Karthäuserhof makes primarily Riesling, but also some Weissburgunder.
