It was Hans Wirsching who in the 1920s decided to name the best vineyard in Iphofen "Julius-Echter-Berg" after Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (1545-1617) who was bishop of Würzburg in Franken. The vineyard conists of mainly Keuper soil, which warms up during the day and radiates heat back to the vines during the night.
The Riesling vines on Weingut Wirsching Iphöfer Julius-Echter-Berg are 35 years. The vineyard is south facing and consistently produces fruit with high Oechsle degrees (the 1993 Riesling Spätlese trocken has 13.5% alcohol). Yields are kept low at 40-50 hl/ha.
