The steep vineyards around Trittenheim consist primarily of slate. The Rieslings of Ansgar Clüsserath impress by a seemingly effortless harmony of fruit flavors, acidity and sweetness.
The winemaking approach is traditional: natural yeasts are given enough time for a slow fermentation, which happens in large old wooden casks. The wines have a strong backbone, a Spätlese sometimes seems almost full-bodied despite a low alcohol content of 8.5%.
