The 2005 Winninger Röttgen Spätlese trocken has developed nicely over the last two years. When I opened the first bottle in 2007 this Riesling had a strong grapefruit focus and a pronounced spicy character. It was very powerful and maybe a little too alcoholic.

Two years later, the alcohol level is much more balanced and only shows towards the end of the finish. Overall the wine has gained in complexity. Its appearance is still a nice straw color and the nose is now more developed with a medium(+) intensity of aromas of stones, smoke, pink grapefruit, woodruff and a floral overtone. It is dry on the palate and has a medium(+) body. On the palate there is a pronounced intensity of minerality, quince, grapefruit, peach and forest herbs. Medium(+) length. This is a very good Riesling now, but I would think that 2 or 3 years from now this Riesling will start to shine and shine for many more years.

In short:
Very good
