J.J. Prüm 2005 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese
The small village of Graach lies between its more famous neighbours Bernkastel and Wehlen. The "kingdom of heaven" (Himmelreich) has predominantly blue slate soils. The 2005 vintage produced concentrated yet very pure Rieslings with crystalline acidity.
Prüm's Spätlese has a light golden color and a developing nose with a medium(+) aroma intensity. Very mineral, with a fresh smell of citrus peel and fleshy ripe peach and mixed with an earthy note of hay and straw. Complex and quite beautiful aroma!
Sweet on the palate. Crisp acidity. Pronounced flavor intensity: very ripe stone fruit with a distinct mineral structure. Long length with an intensely fruity finish.
On the second day after opening the wine presented itself in astonishing form. The aroma was distinctly earthy, full of warm straw and wet stones and the fruit flavors had become more somber. In fact, I liked it more on day two. In other words: decant!
Prüm's 2005 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese is a perfectly balanced sweet Riesling with an invigorating acidity and intense clean fruit.
