From 2006 through 2008 the Klitzekleine Ring, a group of eleven wineries from around the town of Traben-Trarbach, made wine from a .75 hectare (1.8 acres) small parcel of the Enkircher Ellergrub vineyard, a plot of land which none of them owned. They saved the land from lying fallow because the vineyard was too steep to maintain for the elderly previous owner.
Each year one of the eleven wineries that form the group of the Klitzekleine Ring makes the wine. In 2008 Konstantin Weiser from Weingut Weiser-Künstler made 500 bottles of this fantastic Riesling Spätlese.
The wine has a light lemon color. There is an attractive hint of spontaneous fermentation on the nose. The aroma is intensely mineral. It smells like a piece of iron, with citrus and ripe red apple. On the palate it is only slightly sweet, there is so much minerality in this Riesling that that I can barely taste the residual sugar, of which there must be quite a bit left considering the low alcohol level of 7.5%. The acidity is crisp, the alcohol is low and the body light. Pronounced intensity of minerality, apple and blackberry flavors. Stunning balance and playful elegance. Long length with a nice light spicy finish. Drink now through 2030.
Food: I fetched a piece of light blue cheese and a couple of crackers from the kitchen and I was in heaven.
