The Dry Riesling McFadden Farms 2007 has a medium lemon color. The nose has a distinct pear aroma, not unlike an Australian Riesling, but without the overt candy character.
Instead it has an interesting note of bruised leaves, along with faint citrus aromas and a bit of tarragon, adding a sweet weight to the nose. It is, however, bone-dry. Fresh acidity and mineral flavors hit first, but then the alcohol creeps up a bit. It is noticeable, but is not overpowering the grapefruit and watermelon flavors that dominate the palate.
Minerality shines through towards the end of what is a medium long length. Quite a full-bodied Riesling, but the acidity and citrus flavors keep it elegant. It's good to drink now, but in 5-8 years from now the alcohol should have mellowed a bit and the McFadden Farms should then be even more enjoyable than it already is.
A fine and quite well balanced Riesling from California. The juice was inoculated with yeast strains from Alsace in France and the wine was fermented in stainless steel.
