The Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema is a small cooperative of growers with tiny vineyard holdings in Piedmont's remote corner Carema. The wine is 100% Nebbiolo Spanna (the local clone of Nebbiolo) and is grown on steep terraces at the foot of the great mountain range. The wines are required to age for at least four years before they can be sold.
The 2006 Carema has a medium ruby color. The aroma is full of cherry and strawberry fruit, floral and earthy. It is dry on the palate with only a little amount of tannins. The alcohol is pleasantly balanced at 13%. Medium(+) acidity gives this Nebbiolo a somewhat unexpected freshness and lightness. Black cherry flavors with a hint of licorice. Medium(+) length.
My original plan was to use this wine as the base for a sauce to go with a roast, but as I write this tasting note the bottle is almost finished. What a delightful surprise on an otherwise uneventful Tuesday evening! But what do I do about the roast.
