My dictionary tells me that Tierce is "a former measure of wine equal to one third of a pipe, usually equivalent to 35 gallons (about 156 liters)" and I suppose this Riesling's name refers to the number three as it is made each year by the winemakers of three Finger Lakes wineries: Johannes Reinhardt from Anthony Road, David Whiting from Red Newt Cellars and Peter Bell from Fox Run Vineyards. They blend Rieslings vats from their best vineyards around Seneca Lake into one single Riesling that is supposed to represent the best of the Finger Lakes.
The fruit aroma of the 2008 Tierce is fresh but also has an attractive spiciness. On the palate the Tierce Riesling shows a different face, though. It tastes leaner than it smells, is more mineral with a very crisp citrus flavor. A very good food wine as it seduces the nose with its freshness and spice and offers clean citrus fruit to pair well with any type of fish. Tasted at trade tasting.
